Juli

Juli is a pop rock band from Gießen, Hesse, Germany. It was formed by singer Eva Briegel, guitarist Jonas Pfetzing and Simon Triebel, bassist Andreas “Dedi” Herde and drummer Marcel Römer. The band has three records and ten singles in their repertoire.

In 1996 it was known as Sunnyglade, and under this name the band recorded an album, winning the 2000 Hessischen Rockpreis and reaching second place at the Deutscher Pop-Preis, organized by the Deutscher Rock & Pop Musikerverband. Since 2000, Eva Briegel and Marcel Römer joined the musical fivesome. The band’s line-up hasn’t changed since.

In early 2001, Sunnyglade signed its first album deal with EMI, recording in Berlin under the direction of producer Lutz Fahrenkrog-Petersen. They met Berliners bands Kain and Tex, and loved their German sound.  The encounter inspired the band to change its name to Juli (a song from Tex) and began recording in German.

Juli’s first performance under its new identity took place in June 2002 and conquered its audience, record label and band members. In October 2002, a new album was edited, receiving positive reviews from many record companies. EMI decided to organize a showcase event for the band, in January 16th 2003 in Berlin’s Oxymoron. Three months later, Universal Music organized an unplugged show featuring many artists in front of a jury. Eva Briegel and Jonas Pfetzing played four songs as Juli, invited by an A&R agent that previously saw them played. Due to that show, Juli signed its first record deal with Popkomm.

In February 2005 the band won the Bundesvision competition, representing Hesse, with a song called Geile Zeit. A few days later, they started the Es-ist-Juli Tour that lasted the rest of the year. Juli also played at the Live 8 concert, in Berlin, and published three more singles.

Juli’s compositions are created by their singer and two guitarists. Even when it’s not a collaborative effort, each of them composes their own songs and submits them to the rest of the band almost finished. Juli doesn’t see itself as a rock band, but as an alternative pop group, more concentrated on the lyric’s quality and aiming at a more mature, rather than younger audience.

Juli is one of the groups that are played constantly on German radio. The first singles (Perfekte Welle, Geile Zeit and Regen und Meer) reached the number one spot in Germany’s hit parade and remaining inside the top 10 list. Dieses Leben also reached the highest position, remaining number one for five weeks straight.
