Night of the University of Sonora

The Night of the University of Sonora for this 23rd International Festival Dr. Alfonso Ortiz Tirado 2007 will be on Sunday January 21st at 20:00 hours at Alamos’ City Hall, with the presentation of soprano and artistic director Marybel Ferrales, soprano Margarita Estrada, baritone Emmanuel Mayoral and pianist Daniel Villegas.

Marybel FerralesMarybel Ferrales, soprano
She graduated in classic guitar in the National School of Music and in singing in the Superior Institute of Art in La Habana, Cuba; the two institutions with more prestige in her native Cuba. Her premiere as a soprano was in La Sala Lecuona in the Great Theater of La Habana in a concert organized for the Opera of Cuba, where the public rewarded her with big applauses. Afterwards, she was selected to perform the rol of Pituca in the Cuban film “El vals de la Habana vieja” and in 1987 she acted as Tula the child in the Cuban zarzuela “Maria La O” from maestro Ernesto Lecuona, the one was recorded for the label Egrem.

She was selected as a principal soloist of Cuba’s Opera and immediately she started her professional career having numerous presentations in Cuba and abroad, among them stands out her participation in La Traviata, La Boheme, Lucia di Lammermoor, Elisir d’Amore and La Esclava. Her consecration as zarzuela singer was with the leading roles of two of the most famous Cuban plays due to their complex of vocal and scenic performance: Gonzalo Roig’s “Cecilia Valdez” and Ernesto Lecuona “Maria La O”.

For the Spanish television she performed the opera “La Esclava” from the Cuban composer Jose Mauri. From 1988 to 1992 Marybel Ferrales obtained a contract as a main soloist of the International Company of Operetta and accomplished more than 90 presentations in the leading roles of Franz Lehar’s “La viuda alegre” and “Frasquita”, besides from Benovski’s “Il cavallino bianco” and Kalmann’s “La princesa de las Czardas”; obtaining resounding success in the most important forums of the Italian lyric genre, like: Geneva, Turin, Florence, Pompeii, Verona, Milan, San Remo, Mantua, Roma, Pescara and Sicily. During this period of time, she performed concerts in various European capitals as, Prague, Cracovia and Moscow.

During the celebration of the 4th Festival of Lyric Art in La Habana in 1994, she had the leading roles of Giacomo Puccini’s “Madame Butterfly” and Giuseppe Verdi’s “La Traviata”. In 1995 she had the main role of the Cuban zarzuela “Cecilia Valdez” in its world premiere in Spain. Sine July of 1995 she lives in Hermosillo, Sonora and she works as a full-time teacher in her specialty of singing in the University of Sonora where she has an outstanding scholastic and artistic labor. 

In 1997 she performed Pietro Mascagni’s “Caballería Rusticana” next with the Choir from the University of Sonora, in 2000 Giuseppe Verdi’s “La Traviata” and in 2001 Giacomo Puccini’s “Madame Butterfly”. She has performed several concert and opera galas in the states of Sonora, Sinaloa, Chihuahua and Jalisco, besides from California and Arizona in United States. Stands out during this stage the recordings of two compact discs with selections of the most known arias of opera, under the production of the University of Sonora. In year 2000 Marybel Ferrales was elected general director of the Choir from the University of Sonora, position that she holds up to today.

Margarita EstradaMargarita Estrada, soprano
She began at age 7 in her native Ciudad Obregon, Sonora with the study of classic guitar with her grand-father Manuel Estrada, and at age 14 she had piano lessons with Martha Baena and Vianney Rivera. In 1997 she entered the Conservatory de las Rosas in Morelia, Michoacan with specialty in singing, under the teaching of mezzo-soprano Guadalupe Góngora; she came back to Sonora the following year and lives in Hermosillo since then, where she continued studying singing with Cuban teachers Jesus Li and Marybel Ferrales.

In 1998 she entered the Choir of the University of Sonora where she performed as a soloist and participated in the presentations of La Traviata, Madame Butterfly y Cavalleria Rusticana. Besides from her presentations with the choir, she has offered several concerts organized by the University of Sonora. Margarita Estrada has performed with the choir in the Festival Alfonso Ortiz Tirado celebrated in Alamos and in 2005 she performed as a soloist.

Margarita Estrada offered a concert of Mexican and Cuban music in Oatlands, Virginia and in Washington D.C., United States, and participated in 2004 in Ludwig Van Beethoven’s “Fantasia Coral” in Leesburg, Virginia, United States. She performed in operatic recitals and in bohemian music too, in Ciudad Obregon and Hermosillo. She has taken courses of vocal, piano and scenic improvement, with Enrique Patron de Rueda, Sharon Spinetti, Luis Ledesma, Danielle Orlando, Tito Capobianco, Adriana Grekova, Anush Balasanyan, Daniel Villegas and Todor Petrov. In December 2005 she represented Mexico in the International Singing Contest “Mario del Monaco” in Marsala, Italy, where she had an outstanding performance; in July of the current year, she teached singing classes in the extension of the summer course from the Conservatory of las Rosas 2006, in Ciudad Obregon, Sonora.    

Emmanuel MayoralEmmanuel Mayoral, baritone
Native from Hermosillo, Sonora, he began his musical studies in the University of Sonora under the guidance of mezzo-soprano Gabriela Copca. He has had important participation in several events from his locality and in concerts sponsored by art institutions from Tucson and Phoenix, Arizona, United States. He was a member of the first and only Chamber Choir of the University of Sonora, in charge of musicologist and orchestra director Enrique Chavez.   

He participated as a principal soloist in the 22nd Festival Dr. Alfonso Ortiz Tirado, Alamos 2005, in “Amahl y los visitantes nocturnes”, the first complete opera ever presented in the story of this event. That same year, he traveled to Orizaba and Cordoba Veracruz to participate as a main soloist in the zarzuela “Luisa Fernanda”, performance that deserved compliments from the local press. Emmanuel Mayoral was selected to sing in the concert Futuras Estrellas de la Ópera (Future opera stars), next to professionals and advance students, in an event organized for the international singers Luis Ledesma and Raul Hernandez, and as vocal coach Rogelio Riojas. 

Emmanuel Mayoral has taken courses of vocal training with international opera singers as baritone Luis Ledesmay, tenor Raul Hernandez; with directors Titto Capobianco, Enrique Carreon, Rogelio Riojas and Enrique Chavez. Nowadays, he studies the tenth semester of the Bachelor in Arts with option in Singing in the University of Sonora, under the guidance of Cuban soprano Náyade Proenza. 

Daniel VillegasDaniel Villegas, pianist
He graduated with honors from the Unviersity of Veracruz’s School of Music, under the guidance of pianist Alejandro Corona. He began his studies at age 8 with his father Juan Pablo Villegas and with Araceli Herrera in the Regional Institute of the Fine Arts (IRBAO) in Orizaba, his city of birth. He has performed in recitals and soloist in several cities of Mexico, including the Symphonic Orchestra of Jalapa, one of the most important in the country. He has participated in improvement courses with Stanislaw Seller, Edith Picht, Vitaly Margulis, Nick Carthy, Ulrike Sych (piano); Luis Ledesma and Enrique Carreon (singing). Daniel Villegas participated in the recording of two compact discs for the University of Veracruz and in 1996 he obtained the award for best performance of the Mexican music in the 3rd National Contest of Piano, organized for this institution.    

Vocally he has trained under the guidance of Náyade Proenza in the school of music of the University of Sonora, where at present time he works with repertoire combining presentations as soloist, attendant and singer. Recently, Daniel Villegas was invited for the Youth Music Preservation in Leesburg, VA. He participated in the First Encounter of Juvenile Orchestra organized for the Youth Music Preservation in Leesburg, United States where he offered four recitals including Beethoven’s “La Fantasia Coral”; he also performed in the Institute of Mexico and in the Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo in Washington, D. C.
