25 FAOT INTERNATIONAL 2009In a frame of cultural diversity, with deep regional roots and the presence of artists of national and international renown, FAOT has become the major forum for the presentation of operatic singing in Northwest Mexico. The first event honoring the tenor and philanthropist Alfonso Ortiz Tirado was held January 24, 1985 in the Museo Costumbrista de Sonora in the town of Alamos. This literary-musical celebration evolved into an annual festival with ever-increasing attendance, days of activities and a variety of programs. The administration of Eduardo Bours, Governor of the State of Sonora, received this tradition of nineteen uninterrupted years, hosted by the City of Los Portales and its nearby municipalities. 20th editionReturning to its essence, in the year 2004 the festival solidified its structure as the principal stage for the interpretation of operatic singing in this region of the country. The 20th edition of this event, spanning nine days, developed anew its musical focus, with the addition of other artistic disciplines. 21In 2005, the festival extended its seat to the municipalities of Navajoa and Cajeme, in order to enlarge its reach. Huatabampo, Etchojoa, Empalme, Guaymas, Hermosillo y Nogales participated also in this expansion. Artists of different media, as well as Sonora's indigenous groups and migrants, had a dignified place for the recognition and display of their work. 22Thanks to the support of the electronic media and the new technologies that permit live links and delayed transmissions, the 22nd edition grew in quality and activities in the nine municipalities. With this we had the largest audience in the history of the festival to date; we fortified the ties of cooperation with states and institutions, and were able to count on the participation of artists from other countries of the Americas and Europe. 23Since 2007, this great event has been recognized as FAOT International and has proceeded in the nine municipalities, including the capital of Sonora. 24In 2008, for the first time a space was given to an invited entity, a distinction that fell to Oaxaca, whose artistic offerings are of the highest quality in the country. The concert most relevant, that without a doubt placed FAOT on another level, was presented by Francisco Araiza of Mexico, one of the world's best tenors. In this new stage of the festival, the organization by a committee supported by the National Council for Culture and the Arts, municipalities and state bodies such as the Secretary of Education and Culture, the Office for the promotion of Tourism, Telemax and Radio Sonora, and the creation of a Board of Consultation comprised of recognized artists and intellectuals, have been valuable elements for its strength and direction. In this way, from 2004 to 2008, FAOT has united artists from Spain, France, Belgium, Armenia, the United States, Cuba, Argentina, Brazil, Sweden, Norway, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and of course, Mexico, who have shared the stage with our regional outstanding musicians, writers, and painters. In this period promotional recordings have been edited, highlighting the best of the evening performances, chamber music and other expositions. 2004 marked the first award of the "Dr. Alfonso Ortiz Tirado Medallion" and in 2005, the recognition "Revelación Juvenil Sonora", to propel artists on a successful path and bestow an incentive to develop new Sonoran values: Medallion Dr. Alfonso Ortiz Tirado2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 Youth Revelation from Sonora2004 2005 2006 2007 And to recognize those who have formed generations of musicians and arrangers, also awarded Recognition to Sonoran Master Teacher2006 2007 2008 From January 22- 30, the Festival Dr. Alfonso Ortiz Tirado 2009 will be staged in 105 concerts, with the participation of 42 groups and almost 600 performers, artists and supporting staff; 103 of them exhibiting in the Route of Art.
