Festival Dr. Alfonso Ortiz Tirado, FAOT International
In the year of 1984, after the opening of Alamos’ Museo Costumbrista, the Department of Museums of the Government of the State of Sonora conceive the celebration of a tribute to Dr. Alfonso Ortiz Tirado.
That is how on January 24th year 1985, on the day of birth of Alamos’ tenor and doctor, it was accomplished for the first time a literature and musical gathering in the auditorium of Museo Costumbrista with the assistance of 100 persons.
The following year the experience repeated with a bigger assistance and it was showed with full halls and auditorium.
In 1987 and 1988 the artistic event began exactly on January 24th. Besides the auditorium and hall the patio was crowded too with the audience, and extra speakers and chairs were placed. In those four years, the invited guests came from Hermosillo and Navojoa.
Because of the success and the increase in the assistance to the events, in the year of 1989 the festival was moved to the central patio of City Hall, building that was opened at the end of the 19th Century. For this occasion the performer was a young singer from Sonora who was working in the artistic field in Mexico City.
In the year 1990 the festival, that had change its original name of Remembranzas, it went on for three days from Wednesday January 24th until Sunday January 28th; it was then when acquire the name Alamos’ Festival Dr. Alfonso Ortiz Tirado.
In 1991 the event went on for five days and the two following years it extended for ten days, from Friday to Sunday. From 1994 to nowadays, the celebration it last nine days from Friday to Saturday.
In the year 2004 in its 20th edition, the event gathered more that 700 participants with 60 activities in different forums from the south and center of Sonora. From January 23 to 31st, the Festival recaptured its musical essence and was consolidated as stage of excellence for the operatic performance in this part of the country.
In the year 2005 the headquarters were extended to the towns of Cajeme and Navojoa to have a wider coverage and diversify the scenarios; from January 21st to the 29th it was shown a cultural offer in nearly 250 forums with more than 900 participants of the diverse artistic disciplines and representatives of native groups, who for the first time in the history of this Festival had a deserving space for the recognition and diffusion of their roots and traditions.
During the year 2006, FAOT (Festival Alfonso Ortiz Tirado) consolidates its quality of the artistic offer and the participation of more towns. In the heart of the festival, the community of Alamos enjoys La Bullanga, street performance who gathers musicians, new and professional marching street drummers. Strong activity in dance, theater, workshops, visual arts exhibitions and music concerts of opera, jazz, salsa, trova, rock, world music, sacred, etc., distinguishes this scenario.
With the delivery of the Medal Dr. Alfonso Ortiz Tirado to the Mexican cellist Carlos Prieto, and with the purposeful participation of Hermosillo as FAOT’s headquarters for the first time, this 2007 will be a unique experience. From January 19th to the 27th you will be expected at Alamos, Navojoa, Cajeme, Hermosillo, Huatabampo, Empalme, Etchojoa, Guaymas and Nogales, Sonora.
